Obtaining a NIE
for EU citizens

All citizens of the European Union or Switzerland have the right to reside and work in Spain. If they want to stay in Spain for more than 3 months, they have to register at the Registro de Ciudadanos de la UE where they will be assigned a NIE number.

Requirements

In order to be able to reside in Spain, one of the following requirements must be met:

  1. You must be an employee (you must show a contract of employment or a job offer from the company).
  2. Be self-employed.
  3. Be a student enrolled in a university or official educational institution.
  4. If you don’t work or study:
    • Have a current account with 7,200 euros.
    • Have private health insurance with no limits or co-payments.

This is done immediately (when the appointment is made).

For this procedure it is essential that the interested party attends the appointment in person.
