Procedure for obtaining the
EU citizen family card

The EU citizen’s family card for residence and work allows family members of citizens of an EU Member State or Switzerland to reside and work in Spain.

Requirements

The following requirements must be met in order to obtain an EU family card:

  1. Family links:
    • Be a spouse or registered partner.
    • Be a direct child under 21 years of age or over 21 years of age who is a dependent or disabled person.
    • Be a direct dependent parent of the Union citizen or his/her spouse or registered partner.
  2. Financial means. To have sufficient financial resources to support the applicant and his/her family:
    • The Spanish family member or EU citizen works as an employee in Spain (must show the employment contract).
    • The Spanish family member or EU citizen is self-employed (must show the latest tax return).
    • The Spanish family member or EU citizen is a student or is not working. You must prove that you have 7,500 euros at your disposal.
  3. Have public or private health insurance with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain.

Estimated time

It takes approximately 3 months from the submission of the application to obtain the EU family card.
